how to make a violette vesper martini: inspired by the vesper

The Voilette Vesper is a variation of the traditional Vesper Martini. The original Vesper martini, as made famous by 007 and the variation called Vesper Lynd martini can both be considered a variation of this. As you can see from the recipe, this drink is inspired by the original Vesper.

The major and only difference between the recipes is that this recipe uses Creme de Violette as one of the ingredient instead of the Lillet Blanc in the Vesper. The drink has light violet hue, and looks very similar to an Aviation martini.

Creme de Violette is a strong tasting liqueur with an unique taste which makes it necessary to be judicious with its use. If you use a higher proportion of it, then it could make the drink quite harsh and really un-drinkable. It has a real floral flavor, so go easy on it.

Ingredients

  • 3 shots of Hendricks Gin
  • 1 shots of Grey Goose Vodka
  • 1/2 shot of Creme de Violette
  • A thinly sliced lemon peel for garnish (or a candied Violet)

Preparation/Recipe

  1. Add ice cubes to the martini shaker
  2. Add 3 shots of Gin into the shaker
  3. Add 1 shots of the Vodka into the shaker
  4. Add half a shot of the Creme de Violette to the martini shaker
  5. Shake all the ingredients to mix well
  6. Strain the contents of the shaker into a chilled martini glass
  7. Garnish with a lemon peel or candied violet

Variations and Similar Drinks

Vesper Martini: The original “James Bond” Vesper Martini. This drink uses Lillet Blanc instead of the Creme de Violette.
Vesper Lynd Martini: An original variation of mine that uses equal parts of Gin and Vodka. It uses the Lillet Blanc as well.

Tips

  • This drink needs to be shaken rather than stirred. Shaking the drink seems to work better with the violette liqueur.
  • You can also try with equal parts of Gin and Vodka rather than the 3 to 1 ratio in the recipe.
  • Try with candied violet (if you can get one) as a garnish instead of the lemon peel.
